Dewey Beach Parking Tips

Let’s be real: Dewey Beach is about one mile long and a few blocks wide. It’s a tiny slice of paradise, which means parking is a "unique" situation. But don't worry -with a little local know-how, you can navigate the rules and get straight to the beach with peace of mind.
Here is everything you need to know about the parking scene in Dewey.
⚠️ Important Note: Rules, rates, and dates can change! While we do our best to keep this guide fresh, please always double-check with the Town of Dewey Beach Website or call the Parking Department at (302) 227-6170 to ensure all information is accurate and current before you park.
1. The Golden Rule: Know the Dates
The most important thing to know is when you have to pay.
Free Season: September 16th – May 14th. (Yes, parking is free all winter!)
Paid Season: May 15th – September 15th.
2. The "Monday Night" Secret
Here is a tip not everyone knows: During the summer paid season, parking is FREE on Mondays from 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM (excluding federal holidays). It’s the perfect excuse to drive in for dinner or catch a movie on the beach without feeding the meter.
3. Choosing Your Permit (And Saving Money)
If you are just coming for a quick lunch, hourly parking works. But if you are here for the weekend or a full week, a permit is usually the smarter buy.
Current Rates (Subject to Change):
Hourly: ~$4.00/hour (via Coin Meter or Park Mobile app).
24-Hour Pass: ~$30.00.
Weekend Pass (Fri 10 AM – Mon 10 AM): ~$55.00. (Insider Pick: If you are arriving Friday and leaving Sunday, this saves you the headache of constantly checking the meter).
Weekly Pass (8 Days): ~$100.00.
Seasonal Pass: ~$300.00 (Discounts available for business owners, employees, and property owners).
Where to Buy Permits:
Kiosk: There is an automated kiosk at the entrance of the Town Hall parking lot (105 Rodney Ave) that is open 24/7.
Town Hall: You can buy seasonal permits inside during business hours.
4. How to Pay: App vs. Meter
Park Mobile App: This is the easiest way to pay. You can use it for almost any spot in town. Note: The app usually charges a small transaction fee (approx. $1.00) every time you use it.
Kiosks & Meters: Some streets have credit card kiosks or old-school coin meters.
Permit Holders: If you have a permit (Daily, Weekend, Weekly, or Seasonal), you can park in any available space EXCEPT directly in front of a coin meter.
5. Avoiding a Tow: The 4 Big Rules
The Parking Ambassadors in Dewey are friendly, but they enforce the rules strictly. To help avoid a citation (or a tow), make sure you are aware of these regulations:
Head-In Parking ONLY: If you are parking in a perpendicular spot, do not back in. You must pull in head-first.
Tires Off the Road: Ensure all four tires are completely off the roadway pavement.
Don't Block Driveways: Look for yellow lines painted on the street—these mark driveway entrances. Even if it looks like there's room, don't block the yellow!
Direction of Traffic: If you are parallel parking, you must park in the direction traffic is flowing.
6. "Is it a Lawn or a Parking Spot?"
This confuses first-timers all the time. Because Dewey tries to preserve green space for flood control, many parking spots look like grassy front lawns.
Look for the Sign: If you see a green Park Mobile sign in the grass, that is a valid public parking spot! It is technically the public right-of-way, even if it feels like you are parking on grass.
7. Handicapped Parking
Dewey Beach is very accessible.
Designated Spots: Located at the end of the ocean block at each beach entrance.
Free Parking: If designated spots are full, vehicles with a valid handicapped placard or plate may park in any permit or metered space for FREE. Your placard serves as your pass.
8. Trailers & RVs
The Rule: You must pay for both the vehicle and the trailer (whether hourly or via permit).
Stay Attached: The trailer must remain attached to the vehicle at all times. You cannot unhook a trailer and leave it in a spot.
Oversized: Vehicles over 30 feet need special permission from the Town Manager.
Need Help? If you are confused, look for a Parking Ambassador (they are there to help!) or contact the town directly.
